Safety Tips for Towing a Trailer

Always think about how much your trailer is going to weigh and buy a truck or SUV that can pull over that. Remember the GVWR of your trailer is the “empty” weight, not how much it actually weighs when loaded up. Also, never load your trailer and vehicle past their GVWR, and make sure your vehicle can handle the combined weight, also known as the GCWR.

Although it may be good to customize your vehicle with better tow packages, air bags, and sway bars, don’t modify foundational items like the tires. Getting tires that are too “tall” can make your engine work harder. Tires not “rated” for the weight could cause a blowout on the road. Always consult with the manufacturer if you are not sure about what can be modified in towing a trailer on your vehicle.
