Converting a Cargo Trailer into a Home on Wheels

By M&G Trailer Sales May 26, 2020 Tips and Tricks

You might be thinking, “Is that even possible? To convert a cargo trailer into a home?” Well, the answer is “yes!” To build your own RV would most definitely be a massive feat, but it can absolutely be done! It’s rather common these days – with tiny houses and living spaces being as popular as they are.

While cargo trailers don’t exactly come with many of the things you need to make an RV comfy and warm, they do give quite a bit of space to allow you to make it into anything you want. That freedom might be one of the reasons this movement is becoming so widespread and even liberating. It’s your space to do what you want, and it’s much more affordable than buying nearly any kind of RV. Here at M and G Trailers, we have the right cargo trailer for you to transform into a home on wheels.

There are many ways to go about this project. We’re going to talk about a few ways to take a cargo trailer and turn it into your own space where you can go to relax, retreat and reset.

Choosing the right trailer to transform

The first step is to check our extensive inventory of cargo trailers we have available for you. You’ll need to choose a size that will fir your budget and needs. We have various sizes ready for you at different prices, and it’s important you choose something that isn’t too small or too large. You’ll need plenty of space for your items, but you don’t want to pay for a trailer that’s too large for you needs or budget.

Insulate!

Next, you’ll need to insulate your cargo trailer. This is critical in being comfortable regardless of the season, so don’t skip this step! It really doesn’t matter if you live in a mild or harsh climate – insulation is crucial. It will keep you warm during the winter months and cool during the summer. Of course, you’ll want to cover the walls, but the roof is just as important, as it’s where quite a bit of warm air escapes.

Flooring

Once you’ve got your insulation situation settled, it’s time to look down and handle the flooring. Most cargo trailers come with unfinished plywood flooring, and you can cover this up with a layer of carpet, but why not take it a step further and coat the plywood to keep it looking modern and rustic? You can keep the plywood color, or you can stain it to a darker, warmer color. Just be sure to cover with a coat or two of varnish to keep the wood protected.

Shelves and storage

If your trailer didn’t come with any, or you want a few more, the next step is to install a few more shelves for extra storage. You’ll want to use every single inch of space you have available on the walls, and think upwards when trying to find places to store items. You can even use the ceiling!

You’re probably also wanting to add a bed and a few countertops for the kitchen, so this is the best time to get creative with the space you have. The layout is really up to you, but be sure you do some research and think about where you want things to go so you can maximize your space.

Once you have your furniture in place, you can begin to consider power and electricity. You’ll need to designate a place for your generator and carefully figure out the right areas to put power strips so you can have electricity when you’re on the road.

Decorate!

Now that the technicalities are out of the way, it’s time to decide how you want to decorate. Try to keep it simple as you don’t want too much clutter. And, it’s a small space, so it won’t take much for it to become full and overwhelming. Add a hanging plant from the ceiling, put up a few paintings, (be sure to take these down when becoming mobile) and paint the walls a light color to create the illusion of more space. Add a few throw pillows, fluffy blankets, and a comfy couch, and your sanctuary awaits!
