How To Secure Your Trailer To Protect Your Property

By M&G Trailer Sales October 4, 2018 Service/Maintenance , Tips and Tricks

Chances are, if you own a trailer you haul important cargo. Whether you are hauling heavy equipment on a flatbed trailer or a lawnmower on your utility trailer…Maybe you transport your horses or want to take your snowmobile out for a weekend trip… No matter what you haul, your cargo is important to you and that is why we want to ensure you have the ability to protect your property and prevent potential theft.

Locking When Unhitched

Especially if you are making long haul trips, there will probably come a time when you need to unhitch your trailer from your vehicle. An unhitched trailer is at risk of being stolen, but there is a way you can prevent trailer theft and set your mind at ease during these times. Simple locks, such as this Trimax Coupler Lock, are designed to be used when the trailer is unhitched and will prevent neerdowells from hooking up your trailer to their vehicle and driving away into the night.

Get A Custom Paint Job

So this may sound a bit silly, but having your trailer painted with a custom paint job makes it less likely to be stolen. Think about it this way, someone steals a generic looking snowmobile trailer, it is not likely to be found quickly since it blends in with the hundreds of other snowmobile trailers in the area. However, if someone tries to steal a custom painted snowmobile trailer, it is going to stick out like a sore thumb and is much more likely to be found quickly. Most thieves will shy away from stealing a custom trailer for this very reason.

Lock Your Spare Tire

Many trailers have a spare tire on them. While these are amazing to have in case of an emergency, they are also susceptible to theft.  You can easily prevent spare tire theft off of your trailer by purchasing a Spare Tire Nut Locker. This will keep any hooligans from easily taking your tire right off of your trailer.

Invest in an Alarm

In order to better protect your enclosed trailer, you can invest in an alarm system that you can easily arm when you are away. That way if anyone tries to open your door without the key, you will be made aware of the situation.  Trailer alarms tend to make an ear piercingly high pitched noise that will deter any thief! Alarms are one of the best things you can invest in that can help prevent trailer theft.

GPS Tracking Devices

Did you know you can install GSP tracking on pretty much any trailer? While this may not technically prevent trailer theft, it will make it much more likely that you will locate your trailer in the event that it is stolen. We microchip our pets, why not do the same to your trailer and protect your highly important investment!

Insure Your Trailer

Again, this isn’t a preventative but in the event that you do end up with a stolen trailer, you will be happy you took this step. A trailer is an investment. It is an integral part of your business, so it should be properly insured in case of any emergency.  You wouldn’t drive a car without insurance…so you shouldn’t have a trailer without it either!
