Most Haunted Spots in Minnesota

By M&G Trailer Sales October 2, 2020 Lifestyle

To those who don’t dabble in the paranormal, Minnesota may look like a safe and quiet state. But, the scare seekers who know of our tortured past won’t be surprised to hear the haunted history of our state and the many who refuse to leave after they’ve passed.

In the event Covid-19 hasn’t been scary enough for you this year, we invite you to join us as we travel around five of Minnesota’s most haunted destinations. And if you find you’ve had enough scare for one year, we’ll help you find fall-themed fun the entire family can enjoy.

Washington Avenue Bridge (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

Let’s start our journey by taking a short trip down to Minneapolis. Our first stop: the Washington Avenue Bridge. Built-in the 1960’s, this double-decker bridge spans the mighty Mississippi River, connecting the University of Minnesota’s east- and west-bank campuses. Unfortunately, it’s also been the spot where many have committed suicide.

Don’t walk across this bridge at night unless you’re up for a fright. Locals report hearing footsteps of someone walking behind them, or feeling a hand resting on their shoulder. Many believe these experiences to be the presence of ghosts, while others believe it’s just superstition. Day or night, this bridge offers a beautiful view of the river, and while you’re visiting you might enjoy a quick campus tour. You won’t need to travel far for the next spot on this haunted tour.

First Avenue Theatre (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

This iconic venue has seen some sights during its time. If the walls could talk, they’d tell you stories of greyhound busses, Prince, and a gruesome suicide in the fifth bathroom stall of the women’s room. While the bathroom has undergone a series of updates since there are still reports of show-goers seeing a bloated woman hanging from a makeshift noose.

Not planning to make a trip into the girl’s bathroom? Don’t worry, the First Avenue Theatre has enough ghosts to go around. One entity, nicknamed “slippy,” is known to manifest a balloon out of thin air above the stairs. The balloon then lingers and floats up and down the staircase until someone removes it.

Whether you’re visiting to see a show or you stop in for a quick bite at the Depot Tavern, you may be impressed upon by the many spirits that still haunt this space to this day. Before we head out of town, there is still one more stop you should make a point to see.

Holbrook Park (Long Lake, Minnesota)

Just west of Minneapolis, you’ll find Holbrook Park in Long Lake, Minnesota. This indiscreet space is charming enough with its baseball field, skating rinks, picnic area, and playground. However, if you’re looking to steer clear of the paranormal, you don’t want to be at the playground on Sundays around 2 PM.

There are numerous reports of a young girl who vanishes into thin air if you get too close, but the vanishing act is only part of the haunt. If you have the guts to stick around, the young girl will come back for another round. This time she’s got company — her dad — and he’s not friendly. According to local lore, he’s known to attack if you get too close.

BONUS: If you haven’t hit your quota of paranormal activity, stop in Miniapolis’s city hall for a chance to experience the ghost of John Moshik.

Wabasha Street Caves (St Paul, Minnesota)

Wabasha Street Caves (St Paul, Minnesota)

Our next stop takes us just east of the Mississippi into St Paul. During the prohibition era, the Wabasha Street Caves were used as a speakeasy, and they were said to host notables like John Dillinger and Ma Baker, but not all outlaws have good intentions…

The three gangsters, who were brutally shot and subsequently buried under the cement floors, will tell you that themselves if you happen to encounter their spirits in the caves. According to local legend, the current owner often encounters men in 20’s-style attire. He’s also witnessed a strange mist floating through the halls along with a spirited bartender on a mission to refill empty wine glasses.

Speaking of wine, our next stop in St Paul will take us to one of Minnesota’s most haunted restaurants. We hope you’re hungry for more.

Forepaugh’s Restaurant (St Paul, Minnesota)

Forepaugh’s Restaurant (St Paul, Minnesota)

Joseph Forepaugh originally built this three-story mansion for his family, but as I’m sure you can imagine, this story doesn’t have a happy ending for Joseph. In 1892, his wife caught him having an affair with the maid in their bedroom. Upon his wife’s announcement that she was ending the marriage, Joseph, overcome with grief, shot himself. The maid Molly, pregnant with his child, was distraught. So much so, that she hung herself from the chandelier in one of the bedrooms.

Today, Joseph and Molly are both said to haunt the restaurant, but Molly is said to be much more active. Guests report hearing her bang against the inside of walls, seeing her smash glasses, and smelling her favorite lavender perfume. Rumor has it that Halloween is Molly’s favorite time of year, so you are more likely to experience her ghoulish wrath in the fall.
