Guide to Routine Trailer Maintenance

By M&G Trailer Sales March 16, 2021 Service/Maintenance

Purchasing a new trailer is an investment. You expect your trailer to last through years of hard work, a few layers of grime and some ugly weather. To ensure your trailer will survive thousands of miles on dirt roads and rain-slick highways, you should preform routine maintenance. From basic checks to a good hose-down, we put together this guide to routine trailer maintenance.

Air pressure accuracy

Tires are the most important part of your trailer. Without them, your trailer is useless. Before taking your trailer out, take a look at the tires. If anything seems off, or the tires seem deflated, check the tire pressure and examine for leaks. In addition to air pressure, you should also check for wear on your tires. Without proper tread, towing can become dangerous. Skidding and sliding can be prevented by routinely checking your trailer tires.

Check suspension

Another easy check, be sure to inspect suspensions before taking your trailer out to work. Visually check your suspensions for wear, tear or heat cracks in the air springs. You should also confirm nothing is touching the suspension or interfering with its movement. Finally, confirm your air springs have sufficient and equal pressure.

Grease is the word

Lube is essential for proper trailer maintenance. Use the correct amount of lube in the right places ensure quality trailer operation. Research grease for different grades and performance ratings to select the right one for you. Make sure to remove old grease before applying a new layer. Over time, grease can collect dirt and debris making it less effective.

Take a brake

Trailer brakes are one of the most important aspects of trailer safety. To test your electric brake system, locate the slide bar on your brake controller. Start pulling the slide bar gradually as you slowly drive forward, you should feel an increase in resistance as you move from zero to ten on the slide bar. If you’re getting higher on the slide bar and still feel little to no resistance, it’s time to take your brakes in for a professional checkup.

Cleanliness is key

Keeping your trailer clean can increase its lifespan dramatically. A well cared for trailer will last much longer. A clean trailer can make it easier to spot problems, and cleaning can provide time for a quick examination. Check for debris, clear off dirt and inspect you enclosed trailer for roof leaks or broken cross members.

Preventative measures

The best way to protect yourself from trailer mishaps is taking preventative measures. Keep a close eye on your trailer so you can catch issues before a large amount of damage is done.
