Safety Tips for Snowmobile Trailers

By M&G Trailer Sales January 4, 2023 Trailer Lifestyle

The first snow has fallen and it’s that time of year again. Time to get the sled up north and hit the trails! But before you start carving through the snow, you have to get your snowmobile from your home to your cabin or hunting shack. You could take a hurried approach and tie your snowmobile down in the bed of your truck, but it’s not the safest method to transport your beloved sled. You dropped a pretty penny in buying your sled, so why not do everything you can to ensure you can get the most fun out of it year after year? Investing in a snowmobile trailer is a great way to safely transport your sled all winter long. There are plenty of options on the market, from Aluma trailers to Floe trailers and more. They all have their pros and cons, but each one will keep your snowmobile safe and secure. Here are some tips to stay safe as you make your way up to the trails.

Check Your Tires

This is the most simple thing you can do to ensure your safety and the safety of fellow travelers. It may seem like a no-brainer, but in the excitement of getting ready for your trip it can be an easy detail to overlook. Before you load up your trailer, check all of your tires. Make sure they all have proper inflation before loading up. Once you have your trailer loaded up, check your tires again. This way you will be able to identify any slow leaks or other potential issues that may not be obvious when your snowmobile trailer is empty.

Secure Your Load

As you load your trailer, you have to make sure your snowmobile is fully secured. Different manufacturers, such as Aluma trailers or Floe trailers, may have their tie-downs in different locations along the deck of the trailer, but they will always be present. Using ratchet straps, with assistance of ropes, you will want to ensure there is no give to any of your securing lines. At the same time, if any line is too taut it could snap and your snowmobile could quickly become unsecured. Each line should be tightened in tandem with the others to ensure each strap is properly set.

Balancing Act

Making sure your tongue weight is properly set is often the most overlooked aspect of towing a snowmobile trailer. For the unfamiliar: tongue weight is the downward force of the trailer’s torque on the hitch ball of the towing vehicle. It is often recommended that your tongue weight be set between 9%-15% of the gross trailer weight. If your tongue weight is not properly set, it can lead to trailer sway causing a dangerous situation on the road. Situating your load properly, balancing it above the axle so that the proper amount of weight rests on the tongue is the last key component of keeping your snowmobile trailer safe.
